I took a one-hour train ride on Sunday to Lahti, Finland, the site of the conference on "Everyday Aesthetics," sponsored by the International Institute of Applied Aesthetics, that is the purpose of my trip.
Lahti is the fourth largest city in Finland, and calls itself the Gateway to the Finish Lake District. It has a modern train station, with ramps and elevators making it accessible for the disabled and wheeled luggage alike. A van picked us up for the short ride to the Messilä Manor House outside Lahti for the conference. 37 people are registered, including five from the U.S., as well as faculty members and graduate students from Estonia, Denmark, France, Japan, and of course Finland.
