It rained off and on today, but I wanted to get a quick look at the new opera house, l'Opéra Bastille, which opened in 1989. No ballet there either this weekend.
Here is a view of the building from across the Place de la Bastille, a busy place with numerous outdoor cafes, a farmer's market, and lots of visitors, despite the weather. Overhead awnings sheltered diners (including me) during the rain. Smoking is banned in all restaurants now, so those sheltered outdoor areas are a final respite for the nicotine-addicted.
Here is a view with the so-called July column built to honor the victims of the 1830 revolution in France. The English-language web site for the Opera: http://www.operadeparis.fr/visites/index.asp?lng=en
