I arrived in Paris today, to spend a few days sightseeing before heading to the conference in Nancy. I have visited Paris before, so I've seen the famous tourist sites. No ballet performances while I'm here, so I want to focus this time on some sites important in dance history. I also want to look at some things that caught my attention in Slovakia last fall -- energy efficiency, remembrances of World War II, influences of American culture.
I left Los Angeles Thursday afternoon. The jammed waiting area was for a nonstop KLM 747 flight to Amsterdam, and my 777 wide-body Air France flight to Paris. My impression was that the tourists were overwhelmingly Europeans returning home from a cheap vacation in the U.S., taking advantage of the weak dollar against their currencies. The Euro is going for $1.56 as I leave the U.S. Ouch!
